The Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) at the University of Basel is a center of excellence for nanosciences and nanotechnology. It emerged from the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Nanoscale Science and was founded in 2006 by the University of Basel and the Swiss Canton Aargau in order to support research, education, and technology transfer in the nanosciences and in nanotechnology in Northwestern Switzerland. Through the high-tech strategy of the Canton of Aargau, in which nanotechnology is a key component in driving innovation support, the role of the SNI is even more important in connecting industry with cutting-edge research.

National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs) are a funding scheme of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The NCCR SPIN (Spin Qubits in Silicon) is one of six new NCCRs announced in December 2019. Using small and highly scalable spin qubits, the researchers of NCCR SPIN want to make significant contributions to quantum computation. The team consists of experts from various disciplines, such as quantum physics, engineering, computer science, and materials science. Participating institutions are the University of Basel (Leading House), IBM Research Zurich, ETH Zurich, and EPF Lausanne. Research in Basel is pursued at the Department of Physics.

ANAXAM is a technology transfer center focused on applied materials analytics using neutron and synchrotron radiation. ANAXAM will be a single entry point for analytic services in the field of advanced manufacturing supporting industry in their product and process development and in their R&D projects. We have competences in materials science, industrial processes, data analysis and analytics with large- scale facilities. ANAXAM develops and operates tailor-made sample environments for in-situ, operando and high-through-put studies.
ANAXAM provides industry with applied materials analytics, sample preparation and sample environment development. Additionally to the analytics based with neutron and synchrotron radiation supplementary analytics using cleanroom infrastructure and electron microscopy are used to complement the measurements at the large-scale facilities.
